Has your child been the victim of bullying at school?
According to the National Center of Education Statistics, school children of all types are unfortunately falling prey to bullying. In fact, on an almost daily basis, a third of all students between the ages of twelve and eighteen are experiencing this type of violence. Bullying is split into many different types, modes and medium, but one thing is for certain, bullying can have a lasting impact on the victims.
Overview of the Type, Mode and Medium of Bullying
For starters, bullying can be split into the number of bullies that are targeting a victim. In elementary schools, it has been found that the most prominent form of bullying is that of one-on-one bullying, however, once the students age towards high school, pack bullying becomes more of the standard. This type of bullying can have on many different forms, but typically, this is over a longer period of time than individual bullying.
Bullying is split again into the two different modes of bullying - physical and emotional. Physical bullying is basically what it sounds like, the physical violence that can be inflicted upon a victim. This includes fist-fighting, pushing, tripping a victim and even spitting objects towards them. Even the threat of physical violence would fall under this category. Emotional bullying is a little more subtle and includes name-calling, insults and teasing. It can be used to exclude the victim or to degrade them in other ways.
Again, beyond this, bullying can be distinguished by the medium that the bully uses. Traditionally, face-to-face bullying was the only type that was seen in school. In recent years, however, a new form of bullying has become prominent and deserves vast attention. The idea of cyberbullying has crept into the tactics of bullies with the increase in social media and other online functions. In cyberbullying, groups or individuals can anonymously attack a victim or publicly degrade them. Insults, threats and gossips can fly through the internet, and private information can be made public.
